A new and efficient microextraction procedure was optimized for the determination of nitrite by UV/vis spectroscopy. In this method, Nitrite reacts with barbituric acid to give the nitroso derivative, violuric acid. At analytical wavelength of 310 nm, Beer s law is obeyed over the concentration range 1.2 to 1.9 × 103 µg/L of nitrite. The detection limit of the nitrite was found to be 0.4 μg/L. The proposed method is optimized for pH, amount of adsorbent and tolerance amount of other ions. This method has been successfully applied to the determination of trace amounts of nitrite in water samples.
